The DEA regrets to announce the death of retired Det. Second Grade John J. Gardiner, who passed away on April 14, 2025, at the age of 93. Gardiner served in the United States Army as an Infantryman and saw heavy combat during the Korean War.
He was appointed to the NYPD on October 14, 1963, and was promoted to Detective May 10, 1966. He earned second grade on December 22, 1971. He spent many years in the Intelligence Division, but retired out of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office Squad on July 10, 1984. In both commands he was known for his wiretapping expertise. His family said he loved being a cop and believed it to be a noble profession.
John, his wife Claire, and their children moved to Florida upon his retirement. The couple have been married for 70 years. John and his wife grew up together in The Bronx and had been sweethearts since they were little children.
Visitation for Det. Gardiner will be Friday, April 25, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church at 12708 North Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, Florida 33618.
Interment will be Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Shrine of Memories Mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery, 280 Secor Road in Hartsdale, New York. 10530.
