SUMMARY:Funeral for Retired Det. Alan Berkowitz
DESCRIPTION:The DEA regrets to announce the passing of retired Det. Alan Berkowitz. Berkowitz became a New York City Transit Police Trainee in December 1971\, and a Transit Police Officer in May of 1974. He was promoted to Detective in December of 1981\, and retired from Transit Major Case Unit on April 24\, 1986. Berkowitz was the past president of the Broward 10-13 Club\, and was known as the “go to guy” for retirees who needed assistance navigating the medical systems\, Medicare\, Medicare reimbursement\, HR 218\, and other issues of importance. He also worked briefly for the Broward County Sheriffs’ Office as the assistant to the Sheriff. \nHis funeral will be Wednesday\, October 23\, 2024\, at 3:45 p.m. at the Star Of David Memorial Gardens and Funeral Chapel at 7701 Bailey Road\, North Lauderdale\, FL 33068. Attendees will be given information on a later gathering while at the funeral. \nRetired Det. Alan Berkowitz will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues in law enforcement.

DESCRIPTION:At last year’s Annual DEA Dinner on October 4\, 2023\, the DEA honored Members of the Service who were catastrophically injured in the line of duty. One of those members was NYC Housing Police Officer William McNamara. \nBill McNamara was appointed to the New York City Housing Police on November 19\, 1973. On Saturday\, June 10\, 1978\, while on routine\, uniformed\, foot patrol on the busy Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard in the confines of the 32 Precinct\, a man approached and asked the time. As McNamara raised his arm to look at his watch\, the drug-crazed subject grabbed McNamara’s .38 caliber gun from its holster and pumped a string of bullets into the Officer. The perp continued savagely to beat and pistol-whip P.O. McNamara\, who was only 24-years-old. Because of his severe injuries\, in that era of policing\, Officer McNamara was forced to retire and did so on September 10\, 1981. \nHe recently wrote the following to his police family: \nDear Friends\, \nI was injured in the line of duty as a NYC Police Officer years ago. Recently the Tunnel to Towers Foundation completed renovations to my home and installed their Smart Home technology. These improvements have resulted in a much safer and more functional home for me and my family. \nOver the last 20 years\, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has assisted thousands of other first responders\, active military\, and veterans — all who have suffered a catastrophic injury or illness during their service. However\, there are many who still need assistance and\, sadly\, others who are injured each day. \nTherefore\, I will be participating in the September 29\, 2024\, Tunnel to Towers 5k walk and run to help raise funds. This is a major fundraiser for the organization with approximately 40\,000 participants. \nI am establishing a fundraising team for the event\, and I ask you to consider participating or making a donation to my team. In her honor\, “Tay Day” is a celebration of empowerment in the community she served so diligently. This event is not just a day of remembrance\, but also a day of giving back to the community\, something that Det. Neal-Baker was deeply passionate about. \nThere is also a short “walk for the cure” in conjunction with the Lupus Foundation of America with the goal of eradicating lupus. \nThe focus of “Tay Day” is community empowerment with a special focus on literacy and mental wellness initiatives. It will offer free CPR training courtesy of the FDNY\, book giveaways\, reading circles\, STEM activities in the park\, and much more! Det.
