SUMMARY:Unveiling Headstone Honoring Det. Joseph Pucciano
DESCRIPTION:  \nDetective First Grade Joseph Lionel Pucciano was born April 21\, 1879\, in Calabria\, Italy. Because he was raised in the ethnically diverse neighborhoods of the lower east side of Manhattan\, he taught himself to converse in four languages: English\, Italian\, Chinese\, and Albanian\, all of which helped him greatly during his prominent law enforcement career. He was also fluent in various Italian dialects which made him a natural when it came to his work on organized crime cases. \nPucciano joined the New York Police Department on October 16\, 1905. During his career\, he was assigned to a variety of Squads and Units\, including the 44th Precinct\, Brooklyn Headquarters Squad\, the Brooklyn (and briefly the Manhattan) Italian Squad\, the Sixth Detective District\, the Brooklyn Homicide Squad\, the 14th Detective District \, the 11th Detective District\, and the 17th Detective Division. \nPucciano was a hard-hitting\, smart\, innovative\, and savvy Investigator who earned his Detective shield within five years. He earned second grade on December 4\, 1914\, and Det. Sgt. First Grade on February 17\, 1917. (During the early part of Roaring 1920s\, Detectives were given the dual-rank of “Detective-Sergeant\,” but Sergeant was removed from the rank in 1925.) \nPucciano worked on a wide array of cases that ranged from huge\, organized crime takedowns of shakedown artists like the notorious Navy Street Gang\, to abduction and kidnapping for ransom\, as well as Prohibition-era alcohol poisoning cases\, and narcotics. Many of the perpetrators he collared wound up on death row\, such was Pucciano’s ability to build airtight cases against the most ruthless of gangsters. He handled more than 40 murder investigations and was dubbed by the press “The Master Detective” and “The Italian Sherlock Holmes.” \nAmong the fellow Law Enforcement Officers Pucciano worked alongside were Lieutenants Anthony Vachris\, Charles Corrao\, and Michael Fiaschetti\, Commanding Officers of the Italian Squad\, Det. Bernardino Grottano\, who was killed in the line of duty in 1924 and who is buried alongside Pucciano\, and the famous prohibition-era federal agents Izzy Einstein and Moe Smith. \nPucciano passed away at his residence at 381-7th Avenue in Brooklyn\, New York at age 49 on July 13\, 1928\, of pulmonary tuberculosis. His funeral and burial were on July 16\, 1928. Pucciano’s wife\, Cecilia Soutar\, predeceased him by eight years. He and Cecilia left three children: Josephine Eleanor\, age 16 (whose surname became Gulmi); Frank Thomas Pucciano\, age 13; and George Vincent Pucciano\, age 10. Eleanor (as Josephine preferred to be called) took in her brothers until they became of age. Pucciano’s son George also eventually joined the NYPD. \nIn celebration of Det. First Grade Joseph Lionel Pucciano’s life and his illustrious career\, \nthe Detectives’ Endowment Association\, Inc. is proud to gift his family with a new headstone befitting our hero Detective. May he rest in peace. \n

SUMMARY:Wake & Funeral for Active Det. Second Grade John James Edgar
DESCRIPTION:The DEA regrets to announce the passing of Active Det. Second Grade John James Edgar. Det. Edgar passed away at age 52 on April 19\, 2025\, and his death will be pending 9/11 WTC status. \nJohn James Edgar was born and raised in Hoboken\, New Jersey\, and was appointed to the NYPD on April 15\, 1997. His first assignment was PSA 3. Later assignments included Brooklyn North Gang Unit and Brooklyn North Narcotics\, before he eventually landed at his current command\, the NYPD/FBI Joint Organized Crime Task Force. Edgar was promoted to Detective on April 30\, 2008\, and he earned second grade on June 24\, 2016. \nDet. Edgar often expressed how extremely proud he was of his family’s roots in policing and public service\, which dates back approximately 200 years. Among his immediate family members in law enforcement were his late father\, his grandfathers\, and several uncles and cousins. Among the Departments in which his family served were the NYPD\, the Hoboken Police Department\, the Hoboken Fire Department and the New Jersey State Troopers. Even John Edgar’s Detective shield number of #7149 has been part of his family’s long civil service tradition. \nA huge fan of the New York Mets and the Dallas Cowboys\, watching sports with his friends and family was a staple of Det. Edgar’s weekly plans. \nDet. Edgar deeply loved his family and his profession\, and his family greatly appreciates the love\, care\, and respect that his NYPD brothers and sisters displayed in his final days and hours. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. \nHis family requests that in lieu of flowers\, donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at \ndogood.t2t.org/IMODetJohnEdgar \nWake \nWednesday\, April 23\, 2025 \n12:00 Noon to 8:00 p.m. \nLawton-Turso Funeral Home \n633 Washington Street \nHoboken\, NJ    07030 \nFuneral Mass \nThursday\, April 24\, 2025 \n9:30 a.m. \nSaints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church \n404 Hudson Street \nHoboken\, NJ  07030 \n

SUMMARY:Wake & Funeral for Linda Zadroga
DESCRIPTION:The DEA mourns the passing of Mrs. Linda Zadroga on March 3\, 2025. She was the mother of the late NYPD Det. James Zadroga\, who died from 9/11 cancers and diseases in 2006. Because James’ wife Ronda predeceased him\, after James’ death\, Linda and her husband Joseph raised their granddaughter Tyler Ann\, now 23\, in their home in southern New Jersey. \nLinda and Joe Zadroga’s fight for their son and his family led the way for the State and federal 9/11 Disability and Death Benefit bills\, the World Trade Center Health Program\, and the Victim Compensation Fund. They were fierce and steady advocates for all first responders. Along with the DEA and other labor unions\, the Zadrogas fought for legislation\, including that which was named after their son James\, that has now greatly benefitted tens of thousands of first responders\, providing health care and compensation for the ailments\, often fatal\, suffered as a result of serving in the toxic\, environmental waste and debris created by the terror attacks of September 11\, 2001. \nMrs. Zadroga was hospitalized in January of 2024\, when her husband — an Army veteran and the retired Chief of the North Arlington\, New Jersey Police force — was killed in a freak incident. He was hit by a car in the parking lot of the hospital where Linda was being treated. \nIn addition to Tyler Ann\, the Zadrogas are survived by James’ brother Joseph F. Zadroga\, his wife Lisa\, and their daughter Dakota. \nLinda will be deeply missed. What she and Joe accomplished on behalf of all those who suffer from 9/11-related illnesses was profound. May she and her family never be forgotten\, and may Linda and Joe rest in peace. \nViewing for Linda Zadroga  \nMarch 9\, 2025 \n3:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm. \nArmitage & Wiggins Funeral Home \n596 Belgrove Drive \nKearney\, NJ  07032 \nFuneral for Linda Zadroga \nMonday\, March 10\, 2025 \n11:00 a.m. \nQueen of Peace Roman Catholic Church \n10 Franklin Place \nNorth Arlington\, NJ  07031 \nInterment \nHoly Cross Cemetery \n340 Ridge Road \nNorth Arlington\, NJ  07031 \n  \n
