Pietro Gianfrancesco, better known as Pete, joined the NYPD on January 13, 1992. He was promoted to Detective on July 31, 2002, and served 20 years with the Police Department. He retired on January 15, 2012, out of the hard-charging Brooklyn South Warrant Squad. Although the Warrants Division handles pursuit of the most violent and dangerous wanted criminals, illness eventually overtook Pete in retirement, and he passed away on September 2, 2020, because of illnesses related to his work on the rescue and recovery from the World Trade Center attacks of 2001.
He was survived by his wife and daughter.
Det. Gianfrancesco’s death was deemed in the line of duty, and on May 15, 2022, his name was added to the memorial wall in Washington, DC.
