Mt. Vernon Police Officer Needs a Kidney Match

Wednesday, 09 November 2016 16:37

Lauren Cappuccilli, daughter of retired NYPD Det. Pablo Irizarry, contacted the DEA with regards to her husband, retired City of Mt. Vernon Police Officer and 9/11 first responder, Joseph Cappuccilli Jr.

Joe has been fighting progressive renal failure for the last six years. The NYS compensation board has identified Joe’s illness to be related to 9/11.  He is currently seeking a kidney match for a kidney transplant.

His Doctor is Miriam Chung, MD, a Nephrologist at the Rogosin Institute, affiliated with New York-Presbyterian and Weil Cornell Hospitals. Knowing this is an immeasurable appeal to ask of anyone, Joe and Lauren Cappuccilli would be forever grateful to anyone who may step forward and be tested as a potential kidney donor for Joseph.

The Cappuccillis are turning to the strongest brotherhood there is: and that is the brotherhood in blue.

Anyone who would be interested in being tested for a kidney match, please contact: “Andrea” at 212-746-3922 and register with her to be tested.  She will mail you a registration form for you to fill out and return, by mail or fax.  Be sure to give the name of Joseph Cappuccilli Jr. Lauren also can be reached at or phoned at 845-728-6362.

Thank you from the bottom of their hearts.

I am a retired NYPD MOS from the 46. Just to let you know, Joe “Cap” is my close personal friend. Better yet, he is my family. Not only did he serve in blue, he is a U.S. Marine veteran of Desert Storm. He served with my brother; and his son is also a U.S. Military veteran. This is a truly patriotic family: a true hero and a true brother.

As an injured line of duty police veteran and a partner of 9/11 hero Det. James Albanese, I ask for our brothers in blue to please reach out for this brother. I know we all have lost friends, partners and brothers in blue. I hope their lives will never be forgotten. The hours we spent laughing, problem solving, doing our duty, and sometimes fearing what is around that dark corner has bonded us forever.

I now live in South Florida. Due to my job-related injuries and illnesses, I cannot be a donor. I wish I could. He is my family.

God bless all of you. God Bless and keep Joe Cap healthy. Thank you for doing what you do.

Jimmy Poggio #9214
