A Message From the DEA President About COVID Safety

Because we currently have two active Detectives hospitalized with COVID-19, and it was during this time last year when six of our active members passed away from the coronavirus, we want to remind you to take precautions about your health and do not let your guard down. On Sunday, March 28, PBA member P.O. Angel Santiago of PSA 7 passed away from COVID-19. The coronavirus is still taking its toll on the NYPD and the City of New York.

The DEA strongly urges all Detectives, when conducting any interviews in close quarters, to wear plastic face shields, as well as a face mask.

Please remember to wear masks for all social media postings and be mindful of social distancing when possible.

And please take advantage of the Department’s vaccination program and be inoculated.

If you have been tested and diagnosed with COVID-19, we strongly recommend that you file a Line-of-Duty Injury Report. A template for the language recommended by attorney Nick Cifuni can be found on the DEA website. Make entries in your memo book and command log, and memorialize the paperwork with photos.

If anyone is having problems getting PPE from the Department, the DEA still has a supply of masks, gloves, face shields, and hand sanitizers. Request that your Delegate call DEA VP Paul Morrison at the union at (212) 587-1000.

Always be vigilant, be aware, and stay safe. Your health and safety is our utmost concern.

Paul DiGiacomo, President
