DEA Hosted Police Issues Roundtable Forum

DEA Hosted Police Issues Roundtable Forum

On June 18, 2021, the DEA hosted a roundtable discussion put together by several New York Congressmembers, including Rep. Andrew Garbarino, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, and Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security Rep. John Katko (NY) to discuss defunding of police and the resulting escalating crime rates. Attendees included the Department of Homeland Security, NYC police unions, Nassau and Suffolk police unions, and other law enforcement personnel, including NAPO’s Bill Johnson. Paul DiGiacomo and Brian Hunt represented the DEA.

The reason the DEA participated is because New York State is the only State in which a judge is not allowed to consider a defendant’s potential to commit more violence when determining release of a prisoner. Bail reform has created a situation whereby nine out of ten people arrested with illegal firearms are released by judges, and 50% of those arrested for shootings are released to continue to victimize others in the City and State.
