RE: Luis Pinto (DIN# 82A1197)
Dear Mr. Johnson & Mr. Fenner:
I request that parole consideration for the above-mentioned prisoner be denied.
On November 20, 1980, New York City Housing Authority Police Officer James Dunston and his partner responded to a push-in robbery in progress on East 102nd Street in Manhattan. Three armed subjects were holding a family hostage while waiting for another family member to return home. The perpetrators knew the additional family member had the combination to a safe. When the Officers arrived, they knocked on the door, and when the door opened, one of the perpetrators opened fire with a shotgun. The blast killed Officer Dunston. Dunston’s partner opened fire and called for back-up, but the three subjects fled. One subject was apprehended by responding Officers, and the other two were nabbed by Detectives the following day. All three criminals were charged and convicted in the robbery and the murder of Officer Dunston.
This month, January 2021, one of Officer Dunston’s killers will be up for parole: Luis Pinto, housed at Shawangunk Correctional Facility.
For the family, friends, and colleagues of P.O. James Dunston, there is no parole from the pain and frustration of his sudden death. Officer Dunston was a United States Army veteran who was survived by his wife and three grieving children. He selflessly served the City of New York for 11 years with the New York City Housing Authority Police and was assigned to Public Service Area #5.
I request that his killer remain behind bars and urge the Parole Division of the State of New York to deny any parole petition for Luis Pinto. This criminal lost his right to freedom the day he gunned down a New York City Officer in cold blood during a home invasion, kidnaping, and robbery. Let justice be served by keeping Luis Pinto in prison for life. Thank you for considering my position.
Sincerely,
