The Police Pension Fund has informed us that as a result of a recent NYS Court of Appeals decision, Tier 3 members of the NYPD will have until February 18, 2021 to apply to purchase pension credit for periods of past childcare leave taken by a Detective. Both childcare leave and the pension buyback are available to any parent, mother, or father of (a) natural born or an adopted child (or children) who took approved childcare leave. Buying back this pension credit will enable Detectives to eliminate the gap in credited service during the childcare leave period, thus adding back the time toward your years of service for retirement eligibility.
The Police Pension Fund advises that for Tier 3 members who previously took childcare leave, it will send a letter to each affected Detective containing instructions as to how to purchase the pension credit, including the dollar amount needed for the buy back. Detectives who took multiple childcare leaves will receive a separate letter for each childcare leave taken.
You must return the signed letter, along with your buyback payment, to The Police Pension Fund by February 18, 2021 in order to receive the pension credit.
If you are a Tier 3 member who has taken an approved childcare leave of absence and you have not as yet received a letter from the Police Pension Fund, please contact a Pension Fund representative at your earliest convenience:
The Police Pension Fund can be reached at (646) 905-5596.
Tier 3 members who are currently on approved childcare leave, or those who will be taking childcare leave in the future, will be able to purchase the pension credits upon returning to work by submitting a child care buyback application which will be available on The Police Pension Fund website.
