Kenny G. Fung was appointed to the force on January 26, 1981. He was promoted to Detective on March 10, 1989. Among his previous commands were the Brooklyn South Task Force and the Auto Crime Unit.

On January 13, 1997, while assigned to the 72 Squad, Det. Fung and a partner were in Puerto Rico to apprehend two suspects wanted in a New York City homicide. At approximately 1900 hours, Fung passed out and was rushed to a hospital where he passed away from a fatal heart attack. He was 44 years old.

Working at the time of his death, it was declared in the line of duty. Det. Fung was remembered as a “great cop,” “a gentleman,” and a “pleasure to work with.”

Det. Fung was survived by his wife and three sons, one of whom, Kenneth Fung, Jr., followed in his father’s footsteps and retired as a first grade NYPD Detective. He proudly wore his father’s shield #3152.

The northeast corner of Plymouth Road and Mulberry Avenue in Staten Island is named “Det. Kenny G. Fung Way.”
