The DEA regrets to announce the passing of Active Det. Second Grade John James Edgar. Det. Edgar passed away at age 52 on April 19, 2025, and his death will be pending 9/11 WTC status.
John James Edgar was born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey, and was appointed to the NYPD on April 15, 1997. His first assignment was PSA 3. Later assignments included Brooklyn North Gang Unit and Brooklyn North Narcotics, before he eventually landed at his current command, the NYPD/FBI Joint Organized Crime Task Force. Edgar was promoted to Detective on April 30, 2008, and he earned second grade on June 24, 2016.
Det. Edgar often expressed how extremely proud he was of his family’s roots in policing and public service, which dates back approximately 200 years. Among his immediate family members in law enforcement were his late father, his grandfathers, and several uncles and cousins. Among the Departments in which his family served were the NYPD, the Hoboken Police Department, the Hoboken Fire Department and the New Jersey State Troopers. Even John Edgar’s Detective shield number of #7149 has been part of his family’s long civil service tradition.
A huge fan of the New York Mets and the Dallas Cowboys, watching sports with his friends and family was a staple of Det. Edgar’s weekly plans.
Det. Edgar deeply loved his family and his profession, and his family greatly appreciates the love, care, and respect that his NYPD brothers and sisters displayed in his final days and hours. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at
