It is with great sadness that the DEA announces the passing of retired Detective Jason Fernandez. He was appointed to the NYPD January 1, 2006, and was first assigned to the 40th Precinct. He was promoted to Detective on January 28, 2016. He retired on November 11, 2022, from the Bronx Violent Crimes Squad after he suffered a line of duty arm injury.
Det. Fernandez bravely battled ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative and rare disease, better known as “Lou Gherig’s Disease,” which attacks the neurological system, thus making it difficult to walk, talk, and eat. Thus far, there is no known cure for ALS.
Det. Fernandez served our community with dedication. He is survived by his wife, a teenaged daughter, and two young sons. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Det. Fernandez’s contributions to our Police Department will not be forgotten.
