Det. first grade James W. Monahan retired out of the 48 Precinct Detective Squad after 42 years, 5 months, and 11 days with the NYPD. He joined the New York Police Department on July 1, 1968. During his lengthy career with the NYPD, Det. Monahan made 204 arrests, and was recognized 82 times for commendable service, including: 39 awards for Excellent Police Duty, 31 for Meritorious Police Duty, ten Commendations, and two awards for Exceptional Merit. Monahan served in several commands, including the Office of the Bronx District Attorney and the 48 Precinct Detective Squad. Detective Monahan retired on February 14, 2009. He died on October 13, 2014 as a result of his work on the rescue and recovery from 9/11.
