Det. Second Grade Sally A. Thompson passed away on May 2, 2018, from illnesses contracted as a result of her work on the rescue and recovery from the World Trade Center attack of September 11, 2001.
Sally Thompson was appointed to the NYPD on January 3, 1983. She began her career on patrol in the 44th Precinct. Other commands she was assigned to include the Organized Crime Control Bureau, the Narcotics Division, and Bronx Narcotics. She was promoted to Detective on August 31, 1990. She earned second grade on June 24, 1999. Her last command was the 47 Squad, from where she retired on January 10, 2003.
During her 20-year NYPD career, Detective Thompson made 352 arrests. She was recognized four times for Excellent Police Duty and was the recipient of a Commendation. She was married to fellow Detective Kenneth C. Thompson, who retired from the 44 Squad in July of 2001. The couple has two children.
Det. Sally Thompson’s name was added to the NYPD Memorial Wall at Battery Park City on October 11, 2019.
