RE:     Jose R. Curet — DIN #83B0774 / NYSID #2777032N

Dear Ms. Brooks:

On February 21, 1982, Police Officer George Werdann had finished his tour of duty in the 47th Precinct in The Bronx when he was driving through the 52nd Precinct and saw two men who had just committed an armed robbery. Officer Werdann gave chase in his car. One of the men, Jose Curet, running on foot, dropped behind Werdann’s automobile, and, hiding behind the car with premeditated forethought, ran to the driver’s side window and fired, point blank, at the Officer. Werdann, just 23 years old and only three years out of the Police Academy, was pronounced dead by the time he was rushed to the hospital.

Unlike most robbers who would have fled the crime scene as quickly as possibly, Curet was a particularly vicious criminal who needlessly stalked Officer Werdann and executed him in cold blood. Curet was sentenced to 20 years to life, and now, every two years, seeks to be paroled.

For the family, friends, and colleagues of George Werdann, there is no parole from the pain and frustration of his death. He was a devoted son, a devoted civil servant, and an able, young, enthusiastic Police Officer serving the entire citizenship of New York.

I urge the Parole Division of the State of New York to deny the parole petition of this killer. Curet lost his right to freedom the day he decided to commit armed robbery and then gun down a New York City Police Officer in cold blood.

Jose Curet showed no remorse and no mercy in February of 1982, when he made the conscious decision to execute a member of the NYPD. There is no reason why the State or citizenry of New York should show any sympathy to this killer now. Thank you for considering my position.  I am,

Sincerely,
