RE: Martin Mitchell, DIN #83A5551
Dear Ms. Watson & Members of the NYS Parole Board:
I understand that inmate Martin Mitchell, DIN #83A5551 will be seeking parole this December and I request that Mitchell’s parole application be denied.
Mitchell is serving time at Elmira Correctional Facility for the cold-blooded murder of NYPD Police Officer James Whittington.
On October 30, 1982, Whittington was off-duty and socializing in a barbershop in Brooklyn when he was informed that a man with a firearm was fighting with a woman on the street. Whittington approached the man, who ran. The Officer jumped into his car and gave chase, but when he caught up with the subject in front of a housing development on Dumont Avenue in Brooklyn, a struggle ensued, and Mitchell fired three shots into the Officer. Two bullets hit Whittington in the face and one in the shoulder. Mitchell fled and left his victim to die. Officer Whittington’s body was discovered by a Housing Police Officer who took him to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Whittington, who was assigned to the Brooklyn North Field Internal Affairs Unit, left a grieving widow and two daughters. He was only 42 years old.
Now his killer believes he deserves parole.
For the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Whittington, there will never be any parole from the pain and frustration of his senseless death. Their misery should not be compounded by the potential freedom of this cop-killer.
I urge the Parole Division of the State of New York to deny the parole petition of Martin Mitchell, DIN #83A5551. This criminal lost his right to freedom the day he gunned down a hardworking, New York City Police Officer who, during his off-duty hours, was trying to protect another citizen of New York City. Let justice be served by keeping Martin Mitchell in prison for life.
Thank you for considering my position.
Sincerely,
