10-13 For the Cardenas Family

Retired Det. Dave Cardenas was on the force from year 2000 to 2020. He retired from the Intelligence Division where he was a Detective in the Uniformed Executive Protection Unit of the Mayor’s Office.

Dave and his wife have two sons, and, ten years ago, their youngest, Derek, was born with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). The condition is similar to ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, rendering Derek wheelchair bound and special needs for life.

Over the years, special care for Derek has led to financial debt and hardship for the Cardenas family and now they are hoping to move out of state to be able to reconfigure a home that is ADA compliant for Derek’s special needs. The family is trying to raise some funds for this medically necessary venture.
