Det. John P. Tobin of the Bureau of Criminal Identification was felled by a fatal heart attack during a stressful work situation on October 29, 1962. His death was deemed in the line of duty.
John and his widow Betty had a son, also named John, who followed in his father’s footsteps. John Tobin, Jr. was appointed to the force October 14, 1963, one year after his father’s line of duty death passing, and was given his father’s P.O. shield #2390. When he was promoted to Detective on August 30, 1985, he was given his father’s Detective shield of #524. He retired out of Manhattan Robbery on September 17, 1987, and passed away March 30, 1989. He has two sons, John and James. One was an airline pilot, the other a mechanic with the United States Navy.
