Stuart F. Fishkin was appointed to the force on July 28, 1987, and promoted to Detective on June 4, 1999.
As a DEA member, he responded to the destruction of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, and worked amidst the toxic debris on the rescue and recovery from that disaster during the days, weeks, and months that followed.
Det. Fishkin was forced to retire from the force on February 29, 2004, because of an injury he suffered in a job-related automobile accident. At the time, he was assigned to the Fleet Services Division. During his retirement, he contracted illnesses which were tied to his work at the WTC sites. Det. Fishkin passed away on May 8, 2015, and his death was deemed in the line of duty. He was survived by his wife and three children. He is buried at Mt. St. Mary’s Cemetery in Flushing, Queens.
Det. Fishkin’s name was added to the Memorial Wall at Battery Park on October 20, 2016. In June of 2021, the Counterterrorism Bureau of the NYPD named a K-9 in his honor. The Labrador and Pointer mix was given the name “Yogi” which was Det. Fishkin’s nickname. On September 9, 2023, a street was renamed in his honor at Devonshire Drive and Wilson Boulevard in Garden City Park, Town of North Hempstead, New York.
