According to the New York City Police Department, more than 8,000 members of the service to date have contracted the COVID-19 virus. It has come to our attention that there are now hundreds of Detectives who were sick with the Coronavirus during 2020, and after being deemed in the “Line of Duty,” their W-2 for 2020 did not reflect the LOD designation.
After inquiries by the DEA and the other police unions, the Department directed all MOS to file paperwork with the Medical Division to amend their 2020 W-2 tax forms. Once again, with the insistence of the unions, the Medical Division was given additional staff to process these requests promptly and forward the amended paperwork to Payroll.
The Department now states that Payroll is processing the amended W-2s as quickly as possible; but if you have not yet received your amended W-2 for 2020, you should contact and be guided by your Accountant and/or Tax Preparer as you have the option to either file an extension, or file now and later file an amended 1040 once you receive the amended W-2.
It is important to remember the deadline for filing taxes has been extended to May 17, 2021.
We will continue to monitor the situation and advise you of any changes.
Here’s the backstory:
The DEA has filed a Grievance with the NYPD’s Labor Relations urging the Medical Division to declare an “Emergency” situation regarding the backlog of processing COVID line of duty reports, thus allowing Detectives to file an amended W-2. We will continue to monitor the situation.
Approved Line of Duty Injury (LODI) wages are treated on a pre-tax basis. Gross wages are reduced for all days a Uniformed Member of the Service is out sick for a LODI. UMOS who require an amended Wage and Tax statement must submit a UF49 and copy of their 2020 Wage and Tax statement (W-2 and 1127, if applicable) to their assigned Medical District through email. Please use the attached sample UF49 template.
