The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) and Homeland Security are reminding Law Enforcement Officers to be vigilant as ISIL supporters are expanding their targeting to include local law enforcement. ISIL is using the technique of releasing personal information to harass targeted individuals and provide information to sympathizers to entice them to take action against LEOs. Hacking into sensitive databases and posting “kill lists” on social media are but two of the techniques ISIL used in Minnesota and New Jersey cases.
US-CERT (DHS’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team) lists these best practices to avoid data compromise:
Limit the amount of personal information you post;
Remember that the Internet is a public resource;
Be wary of strangers or persons out of the norm contacting you on social media and requesting personal information;
Evaluate your settings and limit access to your information;
Use strong passwords on all accounts;
Check privacy policies and limit options for individuals viewing your social media account(s).
