On August 22, 2024, retired legendary Det. Randy Jurgensen received his long-overdue NYPD Combat Cross — 56 years later — for his gun battle and capture of the perpetrator who shot and killed NYPD Patrol Officer John Varecha on October 8, 1968, in an alleyway outside of a Manhattan East 53rd Street nightclub.
