ESU Det. Terry J. Avent was shot in the left shoulder on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, during the execution of a search warrant at the Vladeck Houses on the lower east side of Manhattan. The perp — 34-year old repeat career criminal Edwin Rivera — had barricaded himself in an apartment. He had multiple priors, including gun possession, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, and felony narcotics, and had been on parole four times. Det. Avent is doing well. Perpetrator Edwin Rivera was in court on March 3, 2025, and is being remanded without bail. He is due back in court on June 9, 2025.
