Two NYPD detectives who succumbed to complications from COVID-19 were given solemn sendoffs Saturday — with police, friends and loved ones all donning protective masks — in what has become the new norm in the age of the coronavirus.
Det. Robert Cardona, who died April 15, was a 19-year veteran of the NYPD and left behind an 8-year-old son after dying from the illness. Assigned to the 13th Precinct Detective Squad, Cardona was a 9/11 cancer survivor and dedicated DEA delegate.
Det. Jeffrey Scalf, who died April 13, joined the NYPD 14 years ago and worked in the Bronx Gang Squad. The 46-year-old US Marine Corps veteran leaves behind a wife and three children.
