On the morning of Saturday, June 29, 2019, Det. Luis Alvarez, who retired out of the Bomb Squad, passed away of illnesses contracted as a result of his work on the rescue and recovery from 9/11/01. Alvarez recently testified in front of the United States Congress to help garner continued funding for the WTC Victim Compensation Fund, which is otherwise slated to run out of funding by 2020. Details about his wake and funeral will be forthcoming.
