Dear Parole Board:
On Saturday, June 26, 1976, off-duty New York City Transit Police Detective George Caccavale was shot and killed during a robbery of the Van Dam Check Cashing Corporation in Long Island City. Det. Caccavale, only 33-years-old, was working this second job at the check cashing facility to support his wife, their nine-year-old son, and their three-week-old daughter. The hold-up had been planned for weeks and the three robber/killers — the late Richard Payton, #78A0098, the late Percy Moore, #78A1182, and Claude Holland, #77A4844 — knew Caccavale was a Police Detective from the placard he kept in the window of his car. That knowledge did not deter them from stealing tens of thousands of dollars while gunning down Det. Caccavale in cold blood.
Now, the mastermind of this armed robbery and homicide is once again seeking parole. For the family, friends, and colleagues of George Caccavale there will never be any parole from the pain and frustration of his sudden death. Caccavale was a devoted husband, a loving father, and for eleven years an able young Transit Police Officer serving not only those he cherished, but the entire population of New York.
The subjects, on the other hand, first met in Stateville Penitentiary in Illinois while serving time for previous crimes. After the robbery and murder of Det. Caccavale, they each fled to other cities with clothing, cash, and transportation provided by Claude Holland, but they were all eventually caught and convicted of second degree murder and armed robbery in the first degree.
As far as I’m concerned, this hardened convict, Claude Holland, lost his right to freedom the day he decided to rob an armored car and gun down a hard-working Police Detective. It should be noted that, according to his cohort Richard Payton, Holland also participated in a home invasion and robbery in Short Hills, NJ, as well as the robbery of a liquor store in Brooklyn, and the robbery and murder of a couple in Chicago, Illinois.
I urge the Parole Division of the State of New York to deny the parole petition of this ruthless killer. I believe Claude Holland, who murdered at least three people, belongs in prison for life.
