RE: John Smith (DIN #74A3692)
Dear Mr. Hels and Members of the Parole Board:
I urge you to deny parole to New York State prisoner John Smith, currently serving time for the attempted robbery and murder of a New York City Police Lieutenant.
On June 20, 1974, Lieutenant Henry Schmiemann left his home in Middle Village, Queens for work in the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Division, when he was confronted by John Smith, who pointed a firearm at the Lieutenant and demanded money. When Lt. Schmiemann identified himself as a Police Officer and drew his service weapon, Smith opened fire.
Despite being mortally wounded, Lt. Schmiemann squeezed off a shot striking Smith in the chest. Smith fled, and an hour later went to the emergency room at Wyckoff Hospital. Smith was apprehended and is currently housed at Wende Correctional Facility in New York State. Now, this perpetrator believes he deserves parole.
This is an affront to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lt. Schmiemann, and to all members of law enforcement. Schmiemann was survived by his grieving family, including his wife and five children. He had been with the New York Police Department for 21 years.
I urge the New York State Division of Parole to fulfill its obligation to safeguard the citizens of New York by keeping cop-killers like John Smith behind bars for life. I respectfully request that the New York State Division of Parole deny the parole petition of John Smith.
Sincerely,
