RE: The People v. Sharborn Esquilin, DIN # 91A818

Dear Ms. McGinnis:

I am urging you to deny parole to Sharborn Esquilin, DIN # 91A8184. On October 29, 1990, Sharborn Esquilin attempted to rob a passenger on the New York City #1 southbound subway train near Rector Street in Manhattan before he approached Irwin Rutman and demanded money. Rutman was a retired member of the NYPD. He drew his retiree’s licensed pistol, but according to witnesses, Esquilin wrestled it away and shot Rutman under the left eye. The retired Officer later died at Bellevue Hospital. He had been a 23-year veteran of the Police Department and was the father of four sons. At the time he was shot, he was returning home from his work as a Deputy Marshal in the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn.

After the shooting, Esquilin fled the scene. He bragged about his crime to others and resumed his criminal lifestyle; and according to a confidential informant, he was committing armed robberies on the lower east side of Manhattan. He was finally arrested during a stakeout when he and two accomplices robbed a victim on Eldridge Street. He is currently incarcerated at Otisville Correctional Facility.

Now, Sharborn Esquilin wants to be paroled. I urge the New York State Division of Parole to fulfill its obligation to safeguard the citizens of New York by keeping this career criminal behind bars for life. Please deny parole for Sharborn Esquilin when he is brought before the Parole Board this February 2022.

Respectfully yours,
