The DEA received this very interesting story from NAPO (the National Association of Police Organizations) and the North Las Vegas Police Officer’s Association.
One of their Patrol Officers responded to a murder in January of 2022, in which a mother had shot and killed her ex-husband: the father of their five children. The five children, ranging in age from six to 17, were taken into protective custody by Child Protective Services and, due to their age(s), were going to be sent to separate homes. The Patrol Officer, Nick Quintana, who lost his own father to gun violence when he was young, felt a need to protect the children and make sure they were not traumatized even further by being separated into different homes. P.O. Quintana and his wife decided to take custody of the five children and began the process of becoming their certified foster parents, with the hopes of eventual full adoption.
In Nevada, a foster parent is entitled to financial aid and insurance for foster children, but only once they have been certified. Officer Quintana and his wife went from a family of two to a family of seven in an instant. The North Las Vegas Police Officer’s Association has already donated financially to the family, but they have also just set up a “Go Fund Me” page to help the Quintanas with the financial burden of adding five extra family members to their home. These are the kinds of acts that our brave men and women in law enforcement do, but that never get the attention they deserve.
Loran McAlister, President of the North Las Vegas Police Officer’s Association, asked us to share their Go Fund Me link with our membership in the event anyone would like to make a donation to this new, intrepid family.
