The New York State Public Safety Alliance recently held a press conference on the steps of City Hall to draw attention to law enforcement’s need to create a buffer zone from the public when we are doing our jobs. We currently have bills in Albany to amend the penal law in relationship to establishing a 15-foot safety buffer zone around any New York State, New York City, and/or local, municipal, emergency First Responder, around any Judge of any Court of Law of this State, or around any State, county or municipal Prosecutor during the performance of his or her official duties. S.9974 is sponsored by NY State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton and A.1061B is sponsored by Assemblymember and retired Detective Kwani O’Pharrow. The creation of a clearly established buffer zone will preserve the right of individuals to observe operations while preventing them from interfering. It will also create real penalties for anyone’s failure to adhere to the law.
