Det. Jason Fernandez was appointed to the NYPD January 1, 2006, and retired on November 11, 2022, from the Bronx Violent Crimes Squad after he suffered a line of duty arm injury. Now, Jason has a bigger battle: ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative and rare disease, better known as “Lou Gherig’s Disease,” which attacks the neurological system, thus making it difficult to walk, talk, and eat. Thus far, there is no known cure for ALS.
Members of the service have created a challenge coin to honor and support Det. Jason Fernandez, his wife and his children. The coins are $20 each, and all proceeds will go to the Fernandez family to assist with Jason’s medical costs, as well as install a lift for Jason in the Fernandez home.
